A Serpents Ear was made in response to a call for entries by the Philadelphia Athenaeum for the exhibit “The Decorated Book: Continuing a Tradition” The piece was chosen and exhibited at the Athenaeum , 219 S 6th Street, Philadelphia, PA from December 2, 2011 through March 15th 2012 In The Serpents Ear I have used a real snake skin found in my garden, which is seemingly without tear and complete including the opened mouth and head. The completeness of this artifact inspired me to consider it for an art work. I wrote a poem to give voice to the creature enclosed.

A contemporary treatment of an old book form, exploring the use of animals as symbols of good and evil. Text is printed letterpress and is used as wrappers for fourteen hand colored etchings which are held in a folded paper slipcase. A hand colored etching is mounted on the cover. The book measures 10 1/4 inches by 7 inches. Edition of 26, signed by the artist.

This book is my response to a call for proposals from book artists to create a work based one of 10 titles from The Athenaeum of Philadelphia’s collection. I chose Jacob Weidenman’s, Beautifying Country Homes, and a Handbook of Landscape Gardening. The impetus for this choice was my own love of gardening, and recent discovery of the term Zoophyte, which refers to the archaic scientific belief that certain plants evolved into animals. This is a unique bookwork with seven scanned graphite drawings, embossed pages, and a faux scientific text. The cover includes a diorama containing a “zoophyte.”

This retelling of the Annunciation story was inspired by the painting of the same name by Fra Angelico at the Monastery of San Marco in Florence. In Fra Angelico's image the Virgin and the angel make eye contact. Mary looks alarmed and frightened, not demure or compliant as this scene is often depicted. The Seduction of Marian tells of what may have lead up to that moment, as it would have been experienced by a thirteen girl.

A visual and poetic statement about the place where water meets land. The book has 18 relief and three intaglio etchings with hand coloring, and measures 8 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches. Enclosed in a clam shell box with marbled leather hinge and stamped cover. Edition of 40 signed by artist.

A unique bookwork that was later developed into a limited edition. The images are made using altered Xeroxes and the text is hand written.
